Synthetic Organs

Ethical and Legal Issues
The use of synthetic organs involves health related ethical issues, even before the clinical trials begin. The FDA must approve the product, and this process may take a long time. While waiting for the approval of the FDA, clinical trials will take place in three phases. These phases will involve volunteers who must expose themselves to a new product that could have a positive or negative outcome. This brings us to an important question: Is it ethically correct to use humans as lab rats? Isn't that what clinical trials are doing? Though most products are tested in animals, humans are still putting themselves in uncertain situations, risking their health and in turn their life. (Andre and Velasquez, 19

Unfortunately, this must be done in order to have the new product approved. Another issue would be the use of animals for investigations. This is definitely a wrong thing to do also because all creatures, big and small, have their own value and should be respected just as we want for ourselves. (Andre and Velasquez, 19)
A third point is that a lot of new synthetic organs are starting to be developed from stem cells. There are a lot of ethical issues involving stem cells because they come from sources such as fetuses, etc. In order to obtain the stem cells, the human embryo must be killed. Some think this act is equivalent to murder, some think it's not quite as bad. However; it is categorized as a disturbance in terms of ethics. (CHXA.com, 20)
